Visitor FAQ

Is there parking at the museum?

The museum does not have a parking garage or designated spaces. However, there are two parking garages within one block of the museum: Civic Center Garage (355 McAllister St.) and UC Hastings Parking Garage (376 Larkin St.). Limited metered street parking is also available near the museum.

Does the museum validate parking for these garages?

Asian Art Museum members receive reduced rates at the UC Hastings Parking Garage. Members will be able to validate their parking ticket onsite at our information desk. For further information regarding parking rates for members, please contact the Membership department at [email protected].

Can I visit the store without buying an admission ticket?

Yes. Just tell the admission attendant at the front desk, and you’ll receive a complimentary ticket allowing you to access the store.

Please visit our online Museum Boutique for further information.

Do you have a coat check? Can I check my luggage in your coat check?

Our coat check is open. Any personal items you bring with you to the museum may be stored in coat check for the duration of your visit, including coats, purses, and backpacks. Luggage cannot be taken into art galleries and must be stored in coat check. Food and drink cannot be stored in coat check.

Do you have wheelchairs available?

Wheelchairs will be available at the information desk on a first come, first served basis. Wheelchairs will be cleaned and sanitized after each use.

Is it possible to bring outside food into the museum?

Yes, although food and drink must remain in closed containers and in bags during your visit. Note that the museum’s cafe is now open. There are also a number of neighborhood restaurants offering food to go which our information desk attendants would be happy to direct you to.

Is photography allowed?

Non-commercial photography is always allowed in our collection galleries, as long as the camera’s flash is turned off. Our policy for special exhibition photography depends on the exhibition. Please check the special exhibition page on our website.

Where should I start my visit?

We recommend you begin your visit of the collection galleries on the third floor by taking the escalators or elevator in the museum’s South Court, then working your way down to the second floor. Larger special exhibitions are found in the first-floor galleries.

How much time should I plan to spend to see the collection galleries only, special exhibition only or the whole museum?

The duration of a museum visit depends on the visitor, but the average amount of time visitors stay is 1.5 to 2 hours for the collection galleries, 1 to 1.5 hours for the special exhibition, or 2.5 to 3.5 hours for the entire museum.

Can I leave the museum and re-enter that same day?

Yes. The museum allows re-entry with your original ticket.
